Andrew D.H. Moore

Writer, Rider, Brewer, and Entrepreneur

Every great adventure begins in a tavern. I learned this lesson playing D&D as a kid, before I had a good understanding of what a tavern was. The act of disparate characters coalescing around a central heroic goal kickstarted a love of fantasy and science fiction that transcended TTRPGs. I wanted to contribute to the literature; to write epic stories and share them with a broader audience.

I buried this goal. I continued to write on the fringes of my day, to fill notebooks of worlds, races, and magical artifacts, and to play games, but I focused my life elsewhere. I graduated from Indiana University with degrees in Classical Literature and Philosophy. I completed the post-Baccalaureate program at the University of Pennsylvania in Classical Studies. Then, I completed my M.A in Classical Archaeology at CU Boulder. During this time, I worked on archaeological projects in Turkey, Greece, Crete, and Jordan. I traveled in Israel, Italy, Germany, and England.

Then, Colorado happened. I fell in love with the Rocky Mountains; the beauty of them, the physical challenge of them. I taught literature, philosophy, and history as an adjunct at local universities. I turned my homebrewing hobby into the Intrepid Sojourner Beer Project, a Denver microbrewery focused on international flavors. It provided a place for patrons to tell their stories. Feedback was excellent. We won awards, and we launched distribution. We worked hard, but the pandemic proved insurmountable, and the brewery closed in 2020.

I stayed in beer but became more invested in writing. I joined a wonderful writing group. I climbed mountains in Tanzania, Russia, Alaska, Washington, California, and Colorado. I took bikepacking trips in Utah, Colorado, and the Baja Peninsula. Being alone in a vast landscape became an incredibly powerful experience that feeds my hungry soul.

Speculative fiction is a vehicle not only for great stories, but also for having conversations about socio-cultural issues. The philosopher in me is alive and well. Writing never left me, and conversations with valued friends at taverns continued to drive reflection and introspection in my life. The stories grew louder until I was unable to confine them to the fringes any longer. I now devote my energy full time to the craft of fiction. I love fantasy and science fiction, but I have developed a particular affinity for the complex machinations of Steampunk.
